If that is the case, and if that is the only difference, I believe the 5980 has an MT2 taper in both the tailstock and the milling spindle, and an MT3 taper in the lathe .

I have a 7x10 mini lathe from HF and it is a good little machine to learn on. If I had more money for the lathe and tooling I would have actually gone with little machine shop equipment. I know that you would rather have a rigid base mill and not one of the tilt base ones.
